For the acceptance of a danish marriage certificate, a certain form of authentication is required. Denmark is member of the Hague Convention (Hague convention abolishing the requirement of legalisation for foreign public documents, concluded October 5, 1961). This means, that there is no need of a legalisation of the marriage certificate from the member of a signatory countries respective embassy in Copenhagen. The list of the signatory states can be found here.

If a marriage certificate shall be presented in a non-member states, a legalisation is required.

procedure:

Can only be presented in countries who are members of the Hague Convention if it has the following:

  • authentication of the marriage certificate by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (apostille)

Can only be presented in countries who are not members of the Hague Convention if it has the following:

  • authentication of the marriage certificate by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • legalisation by the respective embassy
