Marriage in Denmark
infomation
change of names after the marriage
On the 1st of April 2006, the Danish legislation regarding the changing of names was revised for couples not residing in Denmark. The term "own family name" (birth name) as well as "married name" were cancelled at a marriage in Denmark.
The new law provides, that foreigners marrying in Denmark including germans, keep their birth names. If they want to have after the marriage one family name together or a compound name, the changing of names has to be made in the country of residence - at the responsible civil registry or at the responsible consulate.
